Mastitis, blocked ducts, and the role of physiotherapy
Mastitis and blocked ducts can be an incredibly frustrating part of your breastfeeding journey, and we know how quickly your plans can change once you start developing symptoms. This World Breastfeeding Week, we want to empower you with knowledge to help prevent and treat blocked ducts and mastitis, and share the strategies that can make your breastfeeding journey smoother.
What is mastitis?
Mastitis is an inflammatory condition of the breast that can result in pain or tenderness, redness or hardness around the breast area, and can coincide with cold and flu-like symptoms, often caused by blocked ducts.
Whilst most people often think of antibiotics as the first-line treatment for mastitis, this is usually only appropriate if there is a bacterial infection. Infection is less common, so antibiotics are not always needed. A priority mastitis physiotherapy appointment at Embrace Physio + Pilates can be a great place to start your treatment.
How does physiotherapy help with mastitis?
At Embrace Physio + Pilates, we utilise a therapeutic ultrasound machine, which uses heat and sound waves to help break down blockages in the breast and reduce inflammation. This can help manage pain, redness and firmness of the breast tissue associated with blocked ducts and mastitis.
This evidence-based tool was added to the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine recommendations in 2022, yet so many people have never heard of it!
Depending on the severity of your symptoms, we often see a significant reduction in symptoms with just 1–3 sessions completed on consecutive days. In many cases, the earlier we begin treatment, the better the outcome. We will always refer you to your GP if your symptoms are not improving as expected or if we are concerned about your presentation.
We can also teach you self-massage and drainage techniques so that you can feel confident managing your symptoms at home.
We recommend booking a mastitis appointment as soon as you become aware of a blocked duct or mastitis symptoms developing so that we can help you get on top of it as quickly as possible.
What other strategies can help treat mastitis?
Continue breastfeeding your baby while mastitis is occurring to help maintain milk flow.
Keep your bra loose and free from underwire.
Apply warmth to the breast prior to feeding, and a cool pack after feeding to help with pain and inflammation.
Rest!
Sunflower lecithin can be helpful for many women. We always recommend discussing this with your pharmacist before commencing.
How can I prevent mastitis in the first place?
Feed regularly and alternate breasts where appropriate to help ensure milk is cleared effectively.
Rest and stay hydrated – your health is a priority.
Wear a well-fitting, supportive bra, while being mindful that it isn't too tight.
Protect your nipples from damage where possible.
Seek support from a Lactation Consultant if feeding is becoming challenging.
